Confession Time (1) | Hidden Gems

Hey readers, in today's first edition of Confession Time, (#CYOT) I decided to kick this meme off with a big list of Hidden Gems! Books that I've come across, read and enjoyed, but haven't seen them get the love  they deserve here in the book community. Below I have 8 titles, both YA and Adult that I believe you guys will be interested in. Read more to find out what they are!

Instead of giving you guys a synopsis, I'm going to give a very brief description of what the book was about in my own words. I'll also link goodreads to each book so you can check them out on your own time.

Hidden by Catherine Mckenzie

If you love adult contemporary novels and a good lifetime movie, then this book is definitely for you!

This book follows 3 different people, Jeff, a man who gets struck and killed by a car leaving work one afternoon. Claire, his wife, who is left to grieve his death, but still having to pick up the pieces and remain strong for their son, and Tish. A co-worker who is also grieving Jeff's death. I know you're wondering, "Well who the hell is Tish, and why is she so distraught about Jeff's passing?" Well my blogger friends, you have to read to find out. If you enjoy a well written storyline, with a realistic and perfectly executed love triangle, then pick up Hidden!

The best story about love and friendship.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller can only be described using one word: Beautiful.

This story follows Patroclus, a young prince who has been exiled to the Kingdom of Phthia. There he befriends and forms a bond with Achilles, the son of a sea goddess and king. You'll follow the lives of Patroclus and Achilles as they transition from young boys to soldiers. If you enjoy Greek Mythology, and even if you usually don't, the writing itself will keep you engaged, giving you moments of happiness, until bam, heartbreak!

A big secret resting on her shoulders, weighs her down as her life begins to spiral out of control.
(No that isn't the synopsis but it sounded like one right? Hehehe)

Pointe by Brandy Colbert follows Theo a young ballet dancer as she deals with a secret she's been keeping from everyone. Her bestfriend Donovan goes missing, and after his return, she battles with the decision on whether she should tell the truth, or keep the secret to protect herself and someone she thought she loved.

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards is another book based on a huge secret. (I seem to like this trend lol)

A doctor is delivering his twin babies. The first twin, a boy, comes out perfectly healthy. The second twin, his daughter does not. Just by glance, he knows that his baby girl has down syndrome, so to protect his wife, or his own selfish ass, he makes a split second decision to pass the baby to a nurse for her to drop off at an institution. His wife on the other hand, is left completely in the dark.

The story continues on to follow David, (the doctor) his wife Norah, the nurse Caroline, and Phoebe the baby girl. Told in alternating chapters, you peak into the lives of these four people, and how this one secret will change their lives forever.

Unteachable by Leah Raeder

New Adult, teacher-student relationship. That's all you need to know.

Just What Kind of Mother Are You by Paula Daly
Your bestfriend's child disappears while under you care. How would you feel?

Lisa is made out to be the worst parent in the world. Having dropped the ball with watching after her bestfriend's daughter, she is blamed by the town and her friend for the little girl's disappearance. She then makes the decision to find the missing child Lucinda herself, but in the process begins to discover that things aren't always as they seem.

Roomies by Sara Zar & Tara Altebrando is such a fun read!

This story follows two girls, Elizabeth and Lauren as they count down their summer till their freshman year of college. Told in alternating chapters through emails, it's a fast read about family, love, and friendships.

Bullying causes Amelia to jump from her school's roof. Or did she?

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight follows Kate, the mother of Amelia who suddenly commits suicide at her school. The question is, what really happened? Kate takes it upon herself to find out the details of her daughter's death by diving into Amelia's most private moments. Piecing together text messages, social media statuses, and emails, she begins to discover the truth behind her daughter's last days.

  1. Great idea!Sometimes it's sad that great books are not that popular, they need more spotlight.
I love Unteachable!I was a bit uncomfortable with the huge gap at first, but later on,I fell in love with the romance.

    2. Yes Unteachable was such a good book! I didn't think I would like it at first, (even though I love teacher-student relationships) but the romance helped sway my opinion. It was done so well!

  2. Pointe has been on my TBR for a while now, so I'm glad to hear you calling it a "hidden gem." I love books about dance (music, too) because you can just feel the passion radiating off of the page. Thanks for all the recommendations - it's always good to spotlight books that don't get as much attention as they deserve.

    1. You should pick it up, I highly recommend it! I liked the fact that she was a dancer, I haven't read much books where the main protagonists was a dancer of any kind, so this was a breath of fresh air. I also actually enjoyed that she was African American, and had a good mix of friends of other ethnicities. If my memory serves me right, one of her bestfriends was Spanish. I decided to do hidden gems because I read sooo many books that people never talk about that are great! Hopefully you guys can find your next favorite read with this list!

    1. Thank you! Yes Hidden is one of my favorite books, girl it reminded me of one of those really good lifetime movies! I definitely recommend it! I think Unteachable was one of the first New Adult novels I've ever read, and it definitely got me into the genre. I already had a weird obsession with student-teacher relationships, (I blame Aria and Ezra lol) and in this book it's done so well. Please pick them up!
