Filthy By Megan D. Martin | Mini Reviews: Books 1-3

I've been busting out mini reviews all this week, and this post is no different. I read these books a couple of weeks back, and now I'm finally able to express my love for these stories. Read more below to view my thoughts on these Filthy serial novels!

Her life is simple, bouncing from one high to the next, bent over greasy truck seats for faceless men. But everything changes when Rhett Hale comes back into her life. Her devilishly handsome step-brother brings life-changing news and a special kind of hate reserved only for Faye. But all the hate in the world can't hide Rhett's lust for her.

He wants something wild. Something filthy.
And Faye is tempted to give him just that.

" The hands pin her down
She'll never get away
The rocks slice her flesh
She'll always feel the pain
The lips take her mouth
She'll never see the day
The darkness swallows her whole
She'll never be the same. "

One night, I was up late browsing goodreads for my next victim . . . er, read. So I'm scrolling and scrolling, not really interested in what I'm coming across, until this very cover catches my eye. " This looks interesting." I whispered to no one in particular. But what made the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention, was the first line in the synopsis:

" Faye is a nineteen year-old prostitute addicted to cocaine.

My eyes nearly popped out of my head, and I swear I almost went into cardiac arrest trying to search for my all-of-a-sudden-missing phone. I needed this book, and fast. So I texted my dear boyfriend, praying that he wasn't sleep just yet, but instead watching Sportscenter. Thank goodness he was.

So the next day I was a happy camper, because not only did I now own Filthy 1, but Filthy 2 as well. Boyfriend most have been in a good mood lol.

 Hehehehehe.

As soon as I reached the last page of the first book, I was left utterly speechless. My first initial thought was,  "How did I enjoy a story so disturbing, so twisted? " To be honest, I still ask myself this question. Filthy is one of those books that is all kinds of wrong. I caught myself on many occasions looking around to see if anyone could tell what I was reading. I felt so weird enjoying a story that exuberated such . . . filthiness. But my goodness did it feel so right. I just can not get enough of these stories, and to say I love this serial would be an understatement. Let's discuss briefly, what book one is all about.

We dive into Filthy 1 with a pretty interesting introduction to Faye Turner. She's a prostitute, living her young life in a complete blur. Her daily routine is pretty repetitive, and goes a little something like this:

Wake up.
Have sex with a few strangers.
Buy Cocaine
Get High.
Repeat.

Definitely not a life for a 19 year old girl. But Faye is a tough cookie, who's learned to deal with the cards she's been dealt, until her step-brother Rhett comes in flipping her world upside down.

Oh Rhett. You a-hole. You . . . evil, handsome, a-hole.

Like Faye, Rhett is a handful of a character. He's her older step-brother, whom she's had a serious crush on for many years. I know what your thinking, Ew, her step-brother?! " Pretty weird when you think about it, but trust me, you'll be rooting for these guys along with everyone else. Anywho, Rhett has his life pretty much together. He's a lawyer, has a girlfriend who he shares his home with . . .  he seems pretty sane right? WRONG. Rhett is just as twisted as Faye. He has this hatred towards his sister, so strong he can't stand the sight of her, or so we think.

" You're nineteen years old and you've probably had sex with more men than the number of times I've taken a shit in my lifetime. You're a homeless prostitute. There isn't anything else to know. "

" You disgust me. "

After he delivers some heartbreaking news to his step-sister, Faye is forced to leave the life she ran away to. The life where she was comfortable, where she felt safe. She's being dragged back to memories she spent years trying to forget, and a person she never thought she'd seen again.

Faye Turner's nose itches for another bump of cocaine and her body burns for the man she can't have-- Rhett Hale, her step-brother. He is completely different than the guy she fell for four years ago-- the guy who turned her down. Now he's a clean cut stranger with eyes that burn with a constant war of lust and hate.

But he isn't the only one with eyes for Faye.

Someone is is back from her old life ... and Faye finds herself falling further into the past she tried to forget.

" She would let go
One day
When the moon glowed with unshed tears
And the world was a better place. "

Just when I thought things couldn't get any crazier, things heat up in book 2. We start the story off at the funeral of Faye's mother. This is the reason why Rhett went searching for her, and dragged her back to her old life. There she comes face to face with a man she tried her best to forget, Taylor, Rhett's father, and her mother's husband. So many overwhelming emotions reappear as she is reminded of the abuse she endured from this man both mentally and sexually, along with the grief she's experiencing from the sudden death of her mother. Ontop of all of that mess, she's lusting for her step-brother more than ever, and after the angry, but sexually charged kiss they shared just a couple of days before, she knows it'll only be a matter of time before she get's what she wants. But Faye is indeed a drug addict, and her need for cocaine has increased tremendously. She hasn't had a hit in days, and a certain someone has exactly what she needs, but at what extent will she go to get it?

Faye thought she could run from her past.

Again.

She thought she could go back to her seedy life. The one where men pay for her body and she snorts cheap coke off the back of her dirty hand. But the past has found her.

Again.

The past with green eyes full of hate and lust.
And this time he plans to keep her.

" She would run from the darkness
Into more of the same
She would run to darkness
She could never stay away "

Things get so intense in this installment, that I tossed my Nook across the room out of frustration! The ending made it no better, leaving me completely on edge, dying to find out what happens next. During the story I'm mentally screaming at Rhett to somehow save Faye from his father's grasp. He's using her addiction to keep her right where he wants her, and of course it's working. Faye is so weak and powerless at this point because of her love for the drug, that's she's willing to do the very thing that she tried so hard to escape from years ago.

These mini reviews were the most difficult reviews I've had to publish yet! I tried so hard not to spoil anyone by giving away too many details, and with stories that are only 40 odd pages, that's definitely a challenge. I know I've said this for a few titles this year, but Filthy is absolutely one of my favorite reads of the year. It's raw, twisted, dark, incredibly well written . . . I mean, what more can you ask for? I'm impressed with the quality of these short "serials" and encourage all readers of forbidden love and everything else in between, to pick these books up. You definitely will not regret it!

  1. I love these mini reviews! That is... quite a premise for the first book. (And to be honest step-brother/step-sister romances actually don't creep me out, lol. Although it does depend on how long they've been step-siblings for.)

I think you did a great job not spoiling anything! I would find it really difficult to review an entire series and remain vague about it, so awesome job, Tika! =)

  2. Thank you Jules! I actually didn't have much trouble until I got to the last book. Soooo much happens, and I knew I didn't want to spoil anyone, so I just winged it lmao. I accidentally spilled a little tea for book two, so hopefully no one is spoiled. * crosses fingers * I love my books about Forbidden love! Especially creepy, dark Forbidden love that's displayed in these stories lol.

  3. I LITERALLY LAUGHED OUT LOUD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AT THE "RHETT, YOU EVIL, HANDSOME, A-HOLE!" OMG I couldn't even divide my review into three parts because if I did, I knew I would spoil stuff and kudos to you for not even spoiling at all. I love how this review is, the transition from woah to HOW-LEE-SHIT!

I'm soooo excited for the 4th book! Have you seen the cover yet? Totally awesome!

    1. These were my hardest reviews to do! I took me forever,I kept adding and deleted things because I was giving too much away. I also dropped a spoiler or two but since no one is noticing, I'm just going to act like nothing happened. "Spoiler, what spoiler?" lol. I could have sworn that at the end of the month she posts her sign up form for the next book. I haven't seem anything yet, but I'm definitely on the lookout, because I have to know what happens next!

  4. You're reviews are so entertaining to read! I love knowing you were scrolling through Goodreads for your next victim and couldn't believe you were the only one hearing the story and no one else around you could know. But wow, this does sound like such a dark type of story, and I don't know if I would be able to read it! Then again, you make it sound really appealing and I wouldn't mind reading something darker now. I will have to think about it. Oh, and this novel has a very original plot.

  5. I don't think I've steered anyone wrong with my recommendations just yet, so with that said READ THESE STORIES. I will admit that at first you'll be like " WTF am I reading?!" but it's so easy to get engrossed in the plot and crazy characters. Not to mention the first two books are free on amazon and they're SUPER short fast reads. I hope you eventually read them! Oh and thank you so much Liv!
